Summary
On Radrolf, between the years 8,700ME and 10,870ME, the Amocil-Marée appeared, rose to power and diminished.
Sometime in the 87th century, Baeghath the Infernal established his stronghold in the Mountains of Amáhl beginning the age of magic in Alíador. This was well after the final collapse of the ancient Mintan empire when the world had fallen into chaos.
There were between fifteen and twenty male and probably only one female Amocil-Marée over the entire two-thousand year period and none perished quietly.
Known names among them were: Baeghath, Ahlnui, H’Ghuûl and Lüren.
Difference from Wizards
Though Wizards have the natural ability to absorb and direct magical energy, they do not have the innate blending of simple will over it that the Amocil-Marée displayed. Conversely, while the Amocil-Marée could simply direct magic through pure will, they studied the most efficient use of magic in the natural world to achieve the maximum effect with the least effort. In this way, they used magic to understand and command the world around them, while Wizards must study and carefully apply what little magic they can direct to tasks mostly already mapped out by the ancients. A Wizard studies known spells and method for achieving results, the Amocil-Marée applied wild magic to achieve whatever they wanted.
It is also notable that the magic of the Amocil-Marée was true magic, a force of energy basic to the fabric of reality and even superior to reality. In later years, the terms wizard, magician and others like them were applied to mere tricksters who used slight of hand, or alchemical smokes and flashes to distract people from their otherwise mundane acts. As the long, chaotic years following the death of Altirion and before the founding of Tamin stretched on, even those with unusual knowledge of herbs and medicine were thought to be magical and often accused of evil intent or actions through the power they wielded.
Comparable Stories from Other Cultures
In Earth history, the most similar personages in story to the Amocil-Marée would be sorcerers. Those who direct "source" magic by will alone. The ancient "singers" from Northern European mythology, such as Väinämöinen are similar to the Amocil-Marée.
